Historical Background

The Mormon Battalion, made up of volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was mustered in at Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory, in 1846 at the start of the Mexican-American War. Serving as part of the Army of the West, they traveled from Council Bluffs to San Diego, California with women, children, and injured and ill soldiers wintering in Pueblo, Colorado. The battalion of 549 men, 33 women, and 51 children helped secure the American West and aided immigration to that part of the country.
