Pallot's Index to Baptism once contained more than 12 million records, but most were destroyed in World War II. The 200,000 surviving records are a valuable resource for those seeking ancestors in the Greater London area. The dates range from 1780 to three years after the onset of General Registration in 1837. These parish christening and baptismal registrations (with some birth dates recorded) cover at least 22 parishes in London and Middlesex, around 27 other parishes, and there are many other miscellaneous entries. They usually give the name of the child and parentage, the parish of baptism and the date.
The original paper slips of the Pallot Index are owned and held at The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies , Canterbury, England. The Institute may have access to fuller details that may have survived among the original parish records. (www.ihgs.ac.uk) The Institute is a not-for-profit educational organization and researches in the records themselves can be arranged. Please visit their website for additional information about the services they provide.
