About Savannah, Georgia, U.S., Cemetery Burial Lot Cards, 1807-1995

Hauntingly beautiful, Savannah, Georgia’s, iconic Laurel Grove and Bonaventure cemeteries are public cemeteries run by the city. This collection includes burial cards and lot owner cards from both of these cemeteries.

Burial cards list each individual in the cemetery and are searchable. They can include the following details:

  • name
  • residence
  • date of death
  • age
  • gender
  • place of death
  • undertaker’s name
  • date of burial
  • grave location

In some cases, you’ll also find comments relating to the circumstances of the death.

The lot owner cards are browsable by lot number. Once you locate someone in the burial cards, note the lot number and browse to the lot owner card to see who else is buried in the lot. Details on lot owner cards can include:

  • lot location
  • lot owner
  • purchase date
  • list of burials in the lot, with death and burial dates
  • list of transfers to the lot and the date of the transfer

Laurel Grove Cemetery
Developed in 1850, Laurel Hill Cemetery segregated burials, with whites in Laurel Hill North and slaves and free people of color in Laurel Hill South. Strangers’ Grounds can be found in both sections. Laurel Hill North is the final resting place of many Confederate soldiers. Laurel Grove Cemetery is located at 802 W. Anderson Street, Savannah, Georgia.

Bonaventure Cemetery
Originally the plantation of the Tatnell family in Savannah, the first burials here were family members. In 1846 the property was purchased by a private company and the Evergreen Cemetery was created. The city of Savannah purchased the cemetery in 1904, making it a public cemetery, and the municipality still maintains the cemetery. The cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road, Savannah, Georgia.
