Interesting facts
- Originally a fur-trading post, the military post of Fort Laramie was established in 1849 when Congress approved the creation of forts along the Oregon Trail to help ensure safe passage of travelers.
- The town of Cheyenne was born in 1867 as the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Wyoming. As it made its way across southern sections of the state, towns like Laramie, Rawlins, Green River, and Rock Springs, began popping up along the line.
- Wyoming was the first territory to permanent women's suffrage in 1869.
- When Wyoming became a state in 1890, one fourth of its population was foreign born.

Wyoming Census Research
Federal censuses for the state of Wyoming begin in 1870. Before that time, some Wyoming residents were included in Utah Territory in the 1850 census, and with Nebraska Territory in 1860.
Wyoming Vital Records
Wyoming began recording births and deaths in 1909. Very few birth and death records were kept on the county level before that time. Marriages have been recorded statewide since 1941. Earlier marriages were recorded by the county clerk in the county were the license was issued.
All Wyoming marriage records from 1869 to 1970 are available from the Wyoming State Archives and Historical Department for all Wyoming counties.
